          Joseph Kessel was born on February 10, 1898, in the Jewish agricultural settlement of Colonia Villa Clara in Argentina.

          Kessel graduated from high school in Nice, and in 1915, he began writing articles for French magazines.

          He served as a volunteer pilot in the French military aviation during World War I. In 1918, he joined the French expeditionary forces and participated in the intervention in the Russian Far East. He later published his memoirs of this experience ("Wild Times") i
